COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the Sustainability programme at Aston University provides a structured 90-credit curriculum designed to develop both technical expertise and interdisciplinary understanding of sustainable systems, engineering practices and environmental management. Students begin with Engineering Project Management, which builds essential skills in planning, executing and managing complex sustainability-focused projects, alongside Life Cycle Analysis and Circular Economy, which examines how products, processes and systems can be designed to minimise environmental impact and promote resource efficiency through circular economic principles. The Interdisciplinary Design Project encourages collaborative problem-solving across different fields to develop innovative and practical sustainability solutions, while the Aston Global Advantage module supports professional development, leadership skills and employability. Environmental Regulations and Impact Assessment provides an understanding of environmental law, compliance frameworks and methods for assessing the environmental consequences of projects, and Pathways to Net Zero focuses on strategies for achieving carbon reduction and long-term sustainability targets across industries and infrastructure systems. In addition to these core modules, students select one specialist stream to tailor their learning. The Renewable Energy and Environmental Systems Stream includes Renewable Energy Systems, which explores sustainable energy technologies and their applications, and Environmental Engineering, which focuses on engineering solutions for environmental protection and resource management. The Supply Chain Management Stream includes Strategic Supply Chain Management and Logistics and Transportation Systems, which address sustainable operations, logistics efficiency and global supply chain optimisation. The Built Environment Stream includes Monitoring and Management of Civil Infrastructure and Water/Wastewater Engineering, focusing on sustainable infrastructure development and water resource management. Overall, the programme integrates engineering, environmental science and management principles to prepare graduates for careers in sustainability, environmental consultancy, renewable energy, infrastructure development and sustainable systems design.
