COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Smart Manufacturing programme provides a structured 120-credit curriculum designed to develop advanced knowledge and practical skills in modern manufacturing systems, digital technologies and industrial automation. Students begin with Digitalisation of Manufacturing Systems, a 30-credit core module that explores how Industry 4.0 technologies, data-driven systems and integrated software platforms are transforming traditional manufacturing into intelligent, connected production environments. Advanced Manufacturing Processes focuses on modern production techniques, materials and engineering methods used in high-efficiency industrial systems. Machine Learning introduces computational approaches that enable predictive analytics, process optimisation and intelligent decision-making within manufacturing environments. Smart Sensors and Control Systems develops understanding of how automated systems monitor and regulate industrial processes using sensor technologies and feedback control, ensuring accuracy, efficiency and system stability. Robot Software covers programming principles and software architectures used to design and operate robotic systems in manufacturing contexts, while Applied Industrial Robotics focuses on the practical use of robots in production lines, including automation, efficiency and real-world industrial deployment. The Aston Global Advantage module supports professional development by enhancing employability, communication and transferable skills needed for global engineering careers.
