COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physician Associate Practice MSc is delivered through two structured stages that integrate academic study, clinical training and research to prepare students for professional roles in contemporary healthcare systems. In Stage 1, the taught stage, students establish a strong grounding in core medical sciences and clinical practice via modules such as Foundation Clinical Sciences and Practice of Medicine, covering essential areas including anatomy, physiology, disease mechanisms, diagnosis and patient management. Early clinical experience is introduced through Clinical Placements 1, where students apply theoretical learning in supervised real-world healthcare settings while developing key skills in communication, teamwork and clinical reasoning. The Health Improvement Project and Research Methods module enhances academic and analytical ability by focusing on evidence-based practice, research design and healthcare quality improvement, enabling students to critically interpret medical evidence and contribute to service development initiatives. In Stage 2, the advanced and dissertation stage, learning progresses to more complex clinical understanding through Advanced Clinical Sciences, which deepens knowledge of disease processes and advanced patient care across a broad range of conditions. Clinical Placements 2 & 3 provide extended and increasingly independent clinical experience across diverse healthcare environments, while the Elective Clinical Placement allows students to focus on a chosen specialty area for more targeted learning. The Health Improvement Project continues as a significant applied research component, addressing real-world healthcare challenges and system improvement through evidence-based approaches. Overall, the programme is designed to support a clear progression from foundational knowledge to advanced clinical competence, equipping graduates with the clinical expertise, professional confidence and evidence-based decision-making skills required to function effectively as Physician Associates within multidisciplinary healthcare teams and deliver safe, high-quality, patient-centred care across a wide range of clinical settings.
