COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the Pharmaceutical Sciences MSc is structured to provide a balanced combination of foundational knowledge, research training and advanced specialist study, totalling 120 credits through a series of core modules designed to build both theoretical understanding and practical competence in pharmaceutical science. Students begin with modules such as Drug Discovery, which introduces the early stages of identifying and developing new therapeutic compounds, alongside Chemotherapy and Selective Toxicity, which focuses on how drugs target disease-causing cells or organisms while minimising harm to healthy tissues, an essential principle in modern pharmacology and oncology-related treatment design. The Research Skills module develops essential academic and scientific abilities including data analysis, experimental design, critical evaluation of literature and communication of research findings, forming the backbone for postgraduate-level scientific inquiry. Principles of Product Analysis and Validation provides training in assessing the quality, safety and effectiveness of pharmaceutical products, ensuring they meet regulatory and industrial standards through rigorous testing and validation methods. More advanced study is delivered through Advanced Pharmaceutical Sciences, which integrates complex concepts across drug development, delivery systems and formulation science, reflecting current challenges in creating effective medicines for increasingly complex diseases. Drug Dosage Form Design is a major practical and theoretical component, focusing on how medicines are formulated into appropriate delivery forms such as tablets, capsules, injections or controlled-release systems to optimise therapeutic outcomes and patient compliance. Together, these modules build a coherent progression from fundamental drug science to advanced pharmaceutical application, equipping students with the technical expertise and analytical thinking required for careers in the pharmaceutical industry, research institutions or further academic study. The structure ensures graduates understand not only how medicines are discovered and developed, but also how they are tested, validated and formulated for safe and effective use in real-world healthcare settings.
