COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Optometry/Ophthalmic Science programme combines research training with a wide range of specialist clinical modules, allowing students to tailor their studies to their professional interests and career objectives. All students begin with Basic Research Methods, which develops the fundamental skills required to understand, evaluate, and conduct scientific research, including research design, data analysis, evidence appraisal, and ethical considerations. Students then select 80 credits from a diverse portfolio of specialist modules. Advanced Research Methods builds on core research skills and supports the development of independent scientific investigation. Ageing Eye Management focuses on age-related ocular conditions and strategies for their diagnosis, management, and treatment. General Ocular Therapeutics explores therapeutic approaches used in the management of common eye diseases and disorders. Glaucoma provides advanced knowledge of the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Health and Patient Psychology examines psychological factors that influence patient behaviour, treatment adherence, communication, and healthcare outcomes. Medical Retina focuses on retinal diseases, including their clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management. Myopia explores the causes, progression, prevention, and treatment of short-sightedness, an increasingly significant global eye health concern. Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics, an approved Independent Prescribing module, develops expertise in ocular medications, pharmacological management, and prescribing practice. Ocular Surface Management examines disorders affecting the ocular surface and strategies for effective treatment and patient care. Paediatric Eyecare focuses on the assessment and management of visual and ocular conditions in children. Prescribing for Disorders of the Eye, another approved Independent Prescribing module, equips students with the knowledge and competencies required for safe and effective prescribing in eye care practice. Refractive Surgery 1 and Refractive Surgery 2 explore the principles, techniques, patient selection, outcomes, and management of refractive surgical procedures. Together, these modules provide advanced clinical knowledge, evidence-based practice skills, research competence, and specialist expertise, enabling eye care professionals to enhance patient outcomes, expand their clinical scope of practice, and progress into advanced, specialist, leadership, or independent prescribing roles within optometry and ophthalmic healthcare.
