COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Investment Analysis and Risk programme provides a comprehensive education in investment management, financial markets, risk analysis, trading, and quantitative finance. In Term 1, Investment Management develops the practical and analytical skills required for careers in asset and portfolio management. Students learn how to evaluate and implement asset allocation and security selection strategies while applying portfolio management theories, performance measurement techniques, and principles of ethical and responsible investing. Trading Techniques introduces the mechanics of financial markets, market structures, trading strategies, and behavioural finance. Students examine market participants, macroeconomic influences, price movements, volatility, and technical analysis tools used to identify trends and make informed trading decisions. Introduction to Financial Econometrics focuses on the application of econometric techniques and statistical software to analyse financial data, enabling students to address real-world financial challenges through data-driven modelling and quantitative analysis. In Term 2, Fixed Income Securities develops expertise in bond valuation, fixed income instruments, interest rate risk management, and financial modelling. Students gain practical experience in analysing bond markets and managing fixed-income portfolios while considering responsible risk management practices. Security Analysis concentrates on equity valuation and investment analysis, teaching students how to evaluate publicly traded securities, identify market mispricing, and apply valuation frameworks in different economic environments. Through case studies and practical modelling exercises, students develop the skills required for careers in equity research and investment analysis. The Aston Global Advantage module supports professional development and employability by enhancing transferable skills and career readiness. In Term 3, Derivatives provides an advanced understanding of derivative markets, financial instrument valuation, trading strategies, and hedging techniques. Students apply no-arbitrage pricing methods and examine exotic options, interest rate derivatives, risk management practices, and the ethical dimensions of derivative trading. Applied Research Methods and Skills develops critical research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities through the study of research methodologies and evidence evaluation. Students also select an optional module. Corporate Treasury and Financial Analysis focuses on treasury management, financial statement analysis, liquidity management, cash flow planning, and financial risk management. Alternatively, Python for Finance develops programming skills for financial analysis, modelling, and data-driven problem-solving using one of the most widely used programming languages in the finance industry. Together, these modules equip students with strong quantitative, analytical, technical, and professional skills for careers in investment management, asset management, risk management, financial analysis, banking, trading, and corporate finance.
