COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc International Relations programme provides a strong foundation in international politics, global governance, security, development, diplomacy, and contemporary global challenges. Students begin with International Relations Theory, which introduces the major concepts, theories, and schools of thought that shape the study of international relations. The module examines fundamental questions concerning power, conflict, cooperation, international organisations, and the causes of war, equipping students with the analytical frameworks needed to understand and interpret global events. Governance of Global Problems explores how international, regional, transnational, and local actors respond to complex global challenges. Students critically assess different models of governance and evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of strategies used to address issues such as globalisation, environmental challenges, economic inequalities, and international cooperation. The Aston Global Advantage module enhances professional development and employability by helping students strengthen leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills through multidisciplinary projects focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) themes. In addition to the core modules, students select five optional modules that allow them to specialise according to their interests. Conflict and Security examines contemporary security challenges and the dynamics of peace, conflict, and international stability. Comparative Regionalism and Regional Cooperation explores the development and influence of regional institutions and their role within the global political order. International Development investigates theories and practices of development, focusing on the causes of global inequalities and the role of international actors in promoting development. The State in the Global Context analyses how globalisation, governance structures, and regulatory changes influence the role and authority of modern states. Negotiation Skills: EuroSim and Model UN provides practical experience in diplomacy, international negotiations, and multilateral decision-making through simulations based on the United Nations and European Union. Migration and Forced Displacement examines migration patterns, refugee movements, asylum systems, and the social and political factors shaping migratory experiences. Religion, Politics and Development explores the complex relationships between religion, political systems, and development processes across different regions of the world. Together, these modules develop advanced analytical, research, negotiation, and communication skills while providing a comprehensive understanding of contemporary international relations, preparing graduates for careers in diplomacy, international organisations, public policy, development, research, and global governance.
