COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Accounting and Finance programme provides a comprehensive understanding of accounting, finance, governance, analytics, sustainability, and emerging technologies within modern business environments. In Term 1, Ethics and Governance introduces the principles of responsible business conduct, ethical decision-making, and corporate governance, enabling students to understand how ethical practices contribute to organisational effectiveness and societal well-being. AI and Automation in Accounting and Finance explores how artificial intelligence and automation technologies are transforming accounting and finance through improved efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making. Students examine emerging tools, practical applications, ethical considerations, and ESG principles through case studies and hands-on projects. Foundations of Accounting and Finance develops core accounting and financial management knowledge by introducing key theories, models, techniques, and professional practices while incorporating real-world business scenarios and emerging technologies. In Term 2, Management Accounting and Control focuses on the strategic role of management accounting in organisational planning, control, and decision-making. Students learn how management accounting tools support business performance while considering sustainability, entrepreneurship, and ethical business practices. The Aston Global Advantage module enhances employability by helping students develop and apply essential professional and transferable skills. Students also select one optional module from a range of specialist areas. Sustainability and Accounting examines accountability, transparency, auditing, sustainability reporting, and ethical responsibility in global business environments. Coaching Self and Others develops coaching, leadership, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills to support individual and organisational development. Fundamentals of Business Analytics introduces statistical analysis, data modelling, and analytics techniques used to support evidence-based business decisions. Risk Management explores operational and financial risks, risk measurement models, financial technology risks, and regulatory challenges. Business Forecasting develops expertise in forecasting methods and analytical tools used to predict business outcomes and support strategic planning. Blockchain and FinTech examines blockchain technologies, cryptocurrencies, fintech innovations, and their impact on financial services and global markets. In Term 3, Accounting and Society explores the social, political, and organisational dimensions of accounting and finance while critically examining ESG issues, financing approaches, and tax policy. Contemporary Issues in Corporate Reporting focuses on financial reporting standards, qualitative reporting practices, and emerging reporting challenges. Applied Research Methods and Skills develops research, analytical, and critical evaluation abilities. Together, these modules provide strong technical expertise, professional skills, and strategic knowledge for careers in accounting, finance, consulting, auditing, and business management.
