COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Human Resource Management programme provides a comprehensive understanding of contemporary people management practices, organisational behaviour, leadership, and strategic human resource management. In Term 1, People Resourcing and Talent Management examines the challenges of attracting, selecting, developing, and retaining talented employees in increasingly complex and competitive organisational environments. Students explore current theories and practices that support effective talent management and workforce planning. Strategic Workplace Learning and Development focuses on evidence-based approaches to employee learning, training, and talent development, highlighting how human resource development initiatives contribute to organisational effectiveness and business strategy. Working Effectively in Organisations explores key concepts from psychology and organisational behaviour, enabling students to understand leadership, management, teamwork, and workplace dynamics while reflecting on their own professional development and leadership capabilities. In Term 2, Digital HR and People Analytics investigates the growing role of technology in human resource management, including artificial intelligence, digital HR systems, and data-driven decision-making. Students learn how organisations use technology and analytics to manage people effectively and support strategic objectives. Sustainable and Socially Responsible HRM examines how human resource practices can promote ethical behaviour, social responsibility, equality, and environmental sustainability while contributing to long-term organisational success. Students critically evaluate the moral and ethical dimensions of people management and develop an understanding of responsible leadership. The Aston Global Advantage module supports professional development and employability by helping students identify, develop, and apply key transferable skills throughout their studies. In Term 3, Leadership for Transformational Change explores the relationship between leadership, organisational culture, and change management, focusing on how leaders guide organisations through periods of transformation and innovation. Employee Relations and Law examines the relationships between employers, employees, governments, and trade unions from an international perspective while providing practical knowledge of employment law, workplace rights, wage negotiations, employee participation, and equal opportunities. Applied Research Methods and Skills develops critical research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities through the study of research methodologies and evidence-based decision-making. Together, these modules provide a strong combination of theoretical knowledge, practical HR expertise, leadership development, and professional skills, preparing graduates for successful careers in human resource management, organisational development, consultancy, and people-focused leadership roles across a wide range of industries and international settings.
