COURSE CURRICULUM
The taught stage of the MSc Health Psychology programme provides a comprehensive foundation in the theories, research methods, and practical applications of health psychology. Students begin with Advanced Research Methods, which develops the knowledge and skills required to design, conduct, evaluate, and critically appraise research within applied health settings. This module strengthens students’ understanding of research methodologies, data analysis, evidence evaluation, and ethical considerations, preparing them for independent research and evidence-based practice. Health Behaviours and Interventions focuses on understanding how health psychology theories explain and predict health-related behaviours. Students learn how to design, implement, and evaluate interventions aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles, preventing illness, and encouraging positive behaviour change across diverse populations. Health Inequalities and Public Health examines the complex interaction between psychological, social, cultural, environmental, and policy-related factors that influence health outcomes and contribute to health inequalities. Through this module, students develop an understanding of public health challenges and explore strategies to improve population health and reduce disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. Psychobiology of Illness and Long-term Conditions explores the relationships between psychological, behavioural, and biological processes and their impact on health and disease. Students critically examine the causes, diagnosis, management, and lived experiences of long-term health conditions while considering the psychological factors that influence illness progression, treatment adherence, and patient well-being. Together, these modules provide a balanced combination of theoretical knowledge, research expertise, and practical skills that enable students to understand the psychological determinants of health and illness. The programme develops critical thinking, analytical abilities, and evidence-based decision-making skills that are highly relevant to healthcare, public health, research, and behavioural intervention settings. By integrating psychological theory with real-world health challenges, the taught stage equips students with the expertise needed to support health promotion, improve patient outcomes, address health inequalities, and contribute effectively to healthcare and well-being initiatives. Overall, the curriculum provides a strong academic and professional foundation for careers in health psychology and related health and social care fields.
