COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Advanced General Dental Practice (Top-Up) programme consists of the Advanced Research Methods in Dental Implantology (DI4ARM) module, worth 30 credits. This module is designed to develop advanced research knowledge and skills that are essential for evidence-based clinical practice and independent academic investigation within dentistry. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of research methodologies, study design, data collection techniques, statistical analysis, and critical appraisal of scientific literature relevant to dental implantology and wider dental practice. The module encourages the evaluation of contemporary research evidence, enabling students to assess the quality, validity, and clinical relevance of published studies. Through this process, students strengthen their ability to make informed clinical decisions and contribute to the advancement of professional practice. Emphasis is placed on ethical considerations in dental research, research governance, and the application of appropriate methodological approaches to investigate complex clinical questions. The module also prepares students for the independent research project that forms the dissertation stage of the master's qualification by developing skills in research planning, proposal development, academic writing, and evidence synthesis. Students learn how to formulate research questions, select suitable research methods, interpret findings, and communicate results effectively within professional and academic contexts. By integrating theoretical understanding with practical research application, the module helps students build confidence in conducting high-quality research that directly relates to clinical practice. Overall, the Advanced Research Methods in Dental Implantology module provides a strong foundation in research principles and evidence-based dentistry, equipping students with the analytical, critical thinking, and investigative skills required to undertake advanced clinical research and contribute meaningfully to the development of modern dental practice.
