COURSE CURRICULUM

This MSc Finance programme provides advanced knowledge and practical skills across key areas of modern finance, preparing students for careers in investment, corporate finance, risk management, and financial analysis. In Term 1, students study Private Equity and Venture Capital, where they learn about investment processes, company valuation, deal structuring, negotiation, exit strategies, and post-investment performance assessment. Advanced Corporate Finance develops expertise in cost of capital, investment appraisal, capital structure theories, payout policies, and corporate governance, enabling informed corporate financial decision-making. Introduction to Financial Econometrics focuses on applying econometric techniques and statistical software to analyse financial data and solve real-world financial problems through practical, data-driven projects. In Term 2, Fixed Income Securities explores bond valuation, interest rate risk management, financial modelling, and bond portfolio management while encouraging ethical and responsible decision-making. Risk Management examines operational and financial risks, risk measurement and control models, regulatory developments, and the implications of financial technology within the financial industry. Students also participate in The Aston Global Advantage, a professional development programme designed to enhance employability, transferable skills, and career readiness. In Term 3, Derivatives provides a comprehensive understanding of derivative markets, pricing techniques, trading and hedging strategies, exotic options, interest rate derivatives, and the ethical considerations associated with derivative trading. Applied Research Methods and Skills develops critical research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, enabling students to evaluate research-based information and apply appropriate methodologies to business and financial challenges. Students also select one optional module. Corporate Treasury and Financial Analysis focuses on financial statement analysis, treasury management, liquidity management, cash flow planning, and financial risk management. Alternatively, Python for Finance develops programming and data analysis skills using Python, enabling students to solve complex financial problems and apply modern analytical techniques.
