COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Cyber Security programme consists of 120 credits of core modules that provide comprehensive knowledge of cyber security principles, technologies, operations, and secure system design. Information Security and Assurance introduces the fundamental concepts of information and cyber security, focusing on risk management, security governance, threat assessment, security controls, and strategies for protecting people, processes, and systems from cyber threats. Cyber Security Operations examines the complete security operations cycle, including preparation, monitoring, detection, response, and recovery activities, enabling students to understand how organisations identify and manage cyber incidents while reducing operational risks. Cyber Security Project and Practice provides practical experience in designing, developing, and securing software systems, with a particular emphasis on mitigating software supply chain attacks and implementing security controls throughout the software development lifecycle. Secure Programming develops the skills needed to create secure software applications by addressing common vulnerabilities, input validation, exception handling, secure coding practices, and software resilience. Advanced Ethical Hacking focuses on offensive security techniques used to identify and assess vulnerabilities in systems and networks. Students gain experience with security testing methodologies, penetration testing tools, and ethical hacking practices commonly used by cyber security professionals. Cyber Resilient Systems explores the design and protection of modern digital systems, covering topics such as cryptography, authentication, cloud computing, web and mobile security, Internet of Things (IoT), industrial IoT, and distributed ledger technologies. Cloud, IoT, ICS Security extends this knowledge by focusing specifically on the security challenges associated with cloud platforms, connected devices, industrial control systems, and operational technologies, enabling students to evaluate risks and develop appropriate security solutions. The Aston Global Advantage module supports professional development by enhancing leadership, communication, teamwork, and employability skills that are highly valued in the cyber security sector. Together, these modules provide a strong balance of technical expertise, practical application, security operations, risk management, software security, and emerging technology awareness.
