COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Cyber Security Management programme provides a comprehensive blend of cyber security governance, risk management, digital technologies, leadership, and strategic decision-making through a structured curriculum delivered across three terms. In Term 1, Management of Cryptosystems introduces the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology, decentralised finance (DeFi), smart contracts, and digital assets. Students examine regulatory frameworks, investment considerations, data privacy, distributed system security, authentication mechanisms, and applied cryptography while developing the analytical skills required to evaluate and manage crypto-related technologies and risks. Managing Offensive Cyber Security Operations focuses on the leadership and coordination of offensive security activities, including penetration testing and red team operations. Students learn how to manage intelligence gathering, supervise technical security teams, ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards, and develop leadership, communication, and decision-making skills relevant to cyber security management roles. Introduction to Cyber Security Human Factors and Regulatory Aspects explores the human and organisational dimensions of cyber security, examining security awareness, stakeholder engagement, privacy requirements, regulatory compliance, and risk management principles that influence organisational security outcomes. In Term 2, Cyber Security Risk Management and Governance develops advanced knowledge of cyber risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and governance frameworks, enabling students to critically evaluate organisational security practices and support strategic decision-making. The Aston Global Advantage module runs throughout the programme and enhances employability through the development of leadership, teamwork, communication, and professional skills. Students also select an optional module, choosing either Network and Cloud Security Management, which focuses on securing networks, cloud environments, distributed systems, and emerging cyber threats, or Digital Venture and Entrepreneurship, which examines digital business creation, technology-driven innovation, funding strategies, and entrepreneurial project development. In Term 3, Strategic Digital Forensic Management develops expertise in digital investigations, evidence acquisition, cybercrime analysis, incident response, and forensic management practices used by organisations and law enforcement agencies. Applied Research Methods and Skills strengthens research, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities while preparing students for evidence-based decision-making and independent investigation. Students complete the programme with a final optional module, selecting either Effective Management Consultancy, which develops consulting and complex problem-solving skills through real-world business challenges, or Artificial Intelligence for Business, which examines the strategic application of AI technologies within organisations. Together, these modules prepare graduates for leadership roles in cyber security governance, risk management, compliance, digital resilience, information security strategy, consulting, and technology management across a wide range of industries.
