COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Construction Management and Engineering programme provides a comprehensive blend of project management, engineering, finance, procurement, and sustainability knowledge through 105 credits of core modules and one optional module worth 15 credits. Engineering Project Management develops the skills required to plan, manage, and deliver engineering and construction projects successfully, covering project planning, scheduling, risk management, resource allocation, stakeholder management, and project control techniques. Digital Engineering and Smart Construction explores the use of digital technologies and innovative construction methods, including digital modelling, data-driven decision-making, smart infrastructure systems, and modern construction technologies that improve efficiency and project performance. Monitoring and Management of Civil Infrastructure focuses on the assessment, maintenance, monitoring, and long-term management of infrastructure assets, helping students understand how infrastructure performance can be optimised throughout its lifecycle. The Interdisciplinary Project enables students to work collaboratively on complex engineering and construction challenges, applying technical, managerial, and problem-solving skills in realistic project environments. Construction Procurement and Contracts examines procurement strategies, contract administration, legal frameworks, and commercial practices used within the construction industry, providing an understanding of how projects are procured, managed, and delivered successfully. Construction Project Finance develops knowledge of financial planning, investment appraisal, funding mechanisms, budgeting, cost control, and financial risk management within construction and infrastructure projects. The Aston Global Advantage module enhances employability by developing leadership, communication, teamwork, and professional skills that are highly valued across the engineering and construction sectors. Students further tailor their studies by selecting one optional module. Customer Engagement in an Engineering Enterprise explores stakeholder relationships, customer-focused strategies, and value creation within engineering organisations, while Pathways to Net Zero examines sustainable engineering practices, carbon reduction strategies, environmental responsibility, and approaches to achieving net-zero objectives within the built environment. Together, these modules provide a strong combination of technical engineering knowledge, business and management expertise, commercial awareness, and sustainability principles. Graduates are equipped to manage construction and infrastructure projects throughout their lifecycle and are well prepared for careers in construction management, project management, infrastructure delivery, engineering consultancy, contract management, asset management, and leadership roles within the global construction and built environment industries.
