COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Computer Science conversion program is structured across taught and dissertation stages to develop strong technical, analytical, and professional competencies aligned with industry needs. During the taught stage, students complete a set of core modules designed to build a solid foundation in computer science principles and practical software development skills. Core modules include Object-Oriented Programming, which introduces structured and reusable software design; Software Engineering, focusing on disciplined development methodologies; AI Vision and Reality, which explores the applications and limitations of artificial intelligence; Database Systems, covering data modelling and management; and Data Structures and Algorithms, which develop efficient problem-solving and computational thinking. The Team Project module enables students to apply their learning in a collaborative software development environment, reflecting real-world practice, while the Aston Global Advantage module supports professional development, employability, and transferable skills. Together, these core modules account for 105 credits. Students also choose one optional module to further tailor their learning, selecting from Software Project Management, Reliability in Software Engineering, or Information Security and Assurance, each worth 15 credits. Following the taught stage, students progress to the dissertation stage, where they undertake an independent project that consolidates their technical knowledge and demonstrates their ability to design, implement, and evaluate a substantial computing solution.
