COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Civil Infrastructure Engineering programme consists of 120 credits of core modules that provide advanced technical knowledge and practical skills across key areas of modern infrastructure engineering. Advanced Structural Engineering develops expertise in the analysis, design, and assessment of complex structures, enabling students to evaluate structural performance, safety, and resilience under a range of loading conditions. Digital Engineering and Smart Construction explores the application of digital technologies within the construction industry, including digital modelling, data-driven decision-making, smart infrastructure systems, and innovative construction practices that improve efficiency, productivity, and project delivery. Water and Wastewater Engineering focuses on the design, operation, and management of water supply and wastewater treatment systems, addressing sustainability, public health, environmental protection, and resource management challenges. Monitoring and Management of Civil Infrastructure examines methods used to assess the condition, performance, and maintenance requirements of infrastructure assets, helping students understand how modern monitoring technologies support asset management and long-term infrastructure resilience. Advanced Geotechnics develops knowledge of soil mechanics, ground behaviour, foundation engineering, slope stability, and geotechnical design, providing the expertise required to address complex ground engineering challenges. The Interdisciplinary Project enables students to apply engineering knowledge within a collaborative environment, integrating technical, managerial, and problem-solving skills to address real-world infrastructure challenges. Advanced Construction Material explores the properties, behaviour, performance, and sustainability of modern construction materials, including innovative materials designed to improve durability, efficiency, and environmental performance. The Aston Global Advantage module supports professional development by enhancing leadership, communication, teamwork, employability, and career management skills that are essential for engineering professionals. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive understanding of structural engineering, geotechnics, water engineering, infrastructure management, construction technology, and sustainable development. The programme combines advanced engineering theory with practical applications and industry-relevant skills, preparing graduates to contribute effectively to the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of critical infrastructure systems. Graduates are well positioned for careers in civil engineering consultancies, infrastructure development organisations, construction firms, transportation agencies, water utilities, local authorities, project management companies, and other sectors involved in the delivery and management of civil infrastructure projects worldwide.
