COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of this MSc Biotechnology programme provides students with a strong combination of laboratory expertise, scientific knowledge, and professional development skills. Core modules begin with Essential Laboratory Skills and Laboratory Competency, where students gain practical experience in safe laboratory practices, standard operating procedures, advanced experimental techniques, data analysis, and interpretation. Professional Development and Research Communication Skills prepares students for future employment by developing career planning, CV writing, interview techniques, and scientific communication abilities. The Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology module establishes a comprehensive understanding of cellular structures, molecular mechanisms, and biological functions, ensuring all students have a solid scientific foundation. Applied Biotechnology – Proteins and Products focuses on the production, expression, and purification of recombinant proteins and biotherapeutics using industrially relevant systems including bacterial, yeast, insect, and animal cells. Microbial Bioprocessing explores the application of microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, and bacteriophages in the production of amino acids, alcohols, antibiotics, food products, recombinant proteins, and other commercially valuable biomolecules. Higher Eukaryotic Biotechnology examines advanced applications of cell and molecular biology in biotechnology, pharmaceutical development, and contemporary research environments. Students then choose an optional module that aligns with their interests and career goals. Sustainable Biotechnology introduces environmentally responsible biotechnology practices and explores the role of biotechnology in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. Alternatively, Bioanalytical Chemistry develops expertise in analytical techniques used to study proteins and lipids while strengthening experimental design, laboratory investigation, data analysis, and interpretation skills. Together, these modules provide comprehensive training in biotechnology theory, laboratory practice, industrial applications, research methods, and professional development, preparing graduates for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, research and development, environmental science, and related industries, while also establishing a strong foundation for doctoral research and further academic study.
