COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MRes Biosciences programme provides students with the essential practical, analytical, and professional skills required for successful scientific research through four core modules worth a total of 60 credits. Essential Laboratory Skills develops competence in a wide range of laboratory techniques and methodologies, including aseptic procedures, sample preparation, experimental protocols, data collection, and data analysis. Students gain hands-on experience with scientific instrumentation and laboratory practices, ensuring they can generate accurate, reliable, and reproducible research data. Professional Development and Research Communication Skills focuses on enhancing written, verbal, and presentation abilities, enabling students to communicate scientific findings effectively to diverse audiences, including researchers, healthcare professionals, industry representatives, and the wider public. The module also supports professional networking and career development within scientific and research environments. Research Competency Assessment provides a structured evaluation of key research capabilities, including literature review techniques, critical appraisal of scientific evidence, experimental design, data interpretation, and scientific communication. Through constructive feedback and guidance, students identify strengths and areas for development, ensuring they are fully prepared for independent research activities. Postgraduate Research Skills introduces the fundamental principles of advanced scientific research, covering research ethics, project management, experimental planning, data management, statistical analysis, literature review methodologies, and scientific writing.
