COURSE CURRICULUM
The taught stage of the MSc Bioinformatics and Genomic Medicine programme provides students with a strong interdisciplinary foundation in genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, and health data analysis through four core modules worth a total of 60 credits. Fundamentals of Genomics in Medicine introduces the key principles of human genetics and genomics, exploring how genomic information can be used to understand disease mechanisms, improve diagnosis, support personalised medicine, and enhance healthcare outcomes. Students develop an understanding of the role of genomic technologies in modern medical practice and biomedical research. Introduction to Bioinformatics Tools and Programming Languages provides practical training in the computational methods used to analyse biological and genomic data. Students gain hands-on experience with bioinformatics software, databases, algorithms, and programming techniques, developing essential skills for managing and interpreting large-scale biological datasets. Advanced Genomics and Omics Techniques examines cutting-edge approaches used in contemporary biomedical research, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and other multi-omics technologies. Students learn how different biological data types can be integrated to generate deeper insights into complex biological systems, disease processes, and therapeutic development. Computational Biology and Health Genomics focuses on the application of computational and statistical methods to analyse large genomic datasets within both research and clinical settings. Students develop the ability to process, interpret, and evaluate genomic information while gaining an understanding of how computational approaches contribute to disease prediction, diagnosis, treatment selection, and precision medicine. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive blend of biological science, computational analysis, data science, and medical applications. The taught stage develops the technical, analytical, and research skills required to work effectively with genomic and biomedical data while preparing students to contribute to advances in healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, clinical genomics, and personalised medicine. By combining theoretical understanding with practical experience in bioinformatics and genomic analysis, the programme equips graduates with the expertise needed to support innovation and discovery in the rapidly evolving fields of genomic medicine and computational biology.
