COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence programme provides a strong foundation in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and deep learning through a combination of core and optional modules. The core curriculum begins with Fundamentals for AI and Data Science 1 and Fundamentals for AI and Data Science 2, which introduce the essential mathematical, computational, statistical, and programming concepts required for successful study and application of AI technologies. AI: Vision and Reality explores the principles, capabilities, limitations, and real-world applications of artificial intelligence, helping students understand both the technical and societal dimensions of AI systems. Applied Machine Learning develops practical skills in designing, training, evaluating, and deploying machine learning models to solve real-world problems using data-driven approaches. Neural Networks and Deep Learning focuses on advanced AI techniques, including artificial neural networks, deep learning architectures, and modern methods used in areas such as image recognition, natural language processing, and predictive analytics. The Aston Global Advantage module enhances professional development, employability, leadership, communication, and teamwork skills, ensuring students are prepared for successful careers in the technology sector. Students further customise their studies by selecting one optional module from each of two groups. The first option group includes Data Visualisation, which focuses on communicating complex data effectively through graphical techniques and interactive visual tools; Health Data Analytics and Management, which examines the analysis and management of healthcare data to support evidence-based decision-making; or Multi-Agent Systems and Strategic Decision Making, which explores intelligent autonomous systems and their application in complex decision-making environments. The second option group offers AI in Biomedical Imaging, which investigates the use of artificial intelligence in medical image analysis and healthcare applications, or Natural Language Processing, which focuses on enabling computers to understand, analyse, and generate human language using advanced AI methods. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive balance of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, equipping students with highly sought-after skills in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and intelligent systems. Graduates are well prepared for careers in AI development, data science, machine learning engineering, business analytics, healthcare technology, intelligent systems design, and other rapidly growing technology-driven industries.
