COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc stage of the Advanced Hearing Therapy Practice programme focuses on developing advanced research expertise and independent investigative skills through two core dissertation modules worth a total of 60 credits. Dissertation I: Research Methods and Proposal introduces students to a wide range of research methodologies commonly used within healthcare, audiology, and hearing therapy. The module develops a critical understanding of research design, data collection methods, ethical considerations, literature evaluation, and evidence-based practice while guiding students through the process of identifying a research topic and developing a detailed project proposal and research protocol. This preparation equips students with the knowledge and confidence required to undertake a rigorous master's-level investigation. Building on this foundation, Dissertation II: Research Project enables students to conduct an original piece of research within the field of hearing therapy or audiology. Under the guidance of experienced supervisors, students apply appropriate research methods to investigate a relevant clinical, professional, or scientific issue, collecting, analysing, and interpreting data to generate meaningful findings. The module encourages both independent learning and collaborative engagement through individual and small-group supervision, helping students develop advanced analytical, problem-solving, and scholarly communication skills. Throughout the research process, students gain valuable experience in managing a substantial project, evaluating evidence critically, and presenting research outcomes to a professional standard. The MSc stage also supports continuing professional development through the Aston Flexible Credit Accumulation Framework, offering flexibility for working professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills while balancing employment commitments. Students may use the module as part of broader professional development goals or as an opportunity to experience postgraduate-level study before committing to further qualifications.
