COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MSc Addiction and Mental Health programme provides a comprehensive foundation in addiction studies, mental health, public health, and research skills through four core modules worth a total of 120 credits. The Addiction module examines the causes, nature, and impact of addictive behaviours, exploring biological, psychological, and social influences on substance and behavioural addictions while considering prevention, intervention, and recovery approaches. The Mental Health module develops an advanced understanding of mental health conditions, their assessment, treatment, and management, enabling students to critically evaluate contemporary theories and practices within mental health care. Health Inequalities and Public Health focuses on the wider social, economic, environmental, and cultural factors that influence health outcomes, examining disparities in access to healthcare and the challenges faced by different populations. Students explore strategies for reducing inequalities and promoting healthier communities through effective public health policies and interventions. The Advanced Research Methods module equips students with the methodological knowledge and practical skills required to design, conduct, and evaluate high-quality research. Students learn to apply quantitative and qualitative research techniques, analyse data, and critically assess evidence to support informed decision-making and professional practice. Together, these modules provide an interdisciplinary understanding of addiction, mental health, and public health issues while developing strong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities. The taught stage prepares students for advanced independent study and professional practice by combining theoretical knowledge with evidence-based approaches, ensuring graduates are well equipped to contribute effectively to healthcare, social care, addiction services, mental health support, public health initiatives, policy development, and research-focused careers.
