COURSE CURRICULUM
The taught stage of the MRes Neuropharmacology programme provides a strong foundation in advanced neuroscience, research methodologies, and professional scientific development, preparing students for independent research and careers in biomedical science. Advanced Neuroscience offers an in-depth exploration of the structure and function of the nervous system, covering anatomy, physiology, cellular neuroscience, and molecular neuroscience. Students develop a comprehensive understanding of how the brain and nervous system operate, progressing from molecular and cellular mechanisms to complex neural networks and whole-organism function. This module provides the scientific knowledge required to understand neurological processes, brain function, and the mechanisms underlying neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. Neuroscience Research Laboratory Competencies focuses on the practical and methodological skills required for high-quality scientific research. Students learn essential aspects of laboratory practice, including health and safety procedures, risk assessment, ethical considerations in neuroscience research, experimental design, research planning, data management, and statistical analysis. The module equips students with the technical competence needed to conduct research safely, effectively, and ethically within modern laboratory environments. Professional Development for Neuroscience is a substantial module that develops the advanced professional, translational, and transferable skills expected of postgraduate scientists. Students enhance their abilities in scientific communication, critical evaluation of research, project management, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and professional practice. The module also prepares students for careers in academia, the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, healthcare, and research organisations by developing the skills required for senior scientific roles. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive blend of advanced scientific knowledge, laboratory expertise, research methodology, and professional development. The curriculum is designed to support students in becoming competent and confident researchers capable of investigating complex questions related to neuroscience and neuropharmacology. By combining theoretical understanding with practical research training, the programme prepares graduates to contribute to the development of new treatments, therapies, and scientific discoveries related to the nervous system while establishing a strong foundation for doctoral study and advanced careers in biomedical research and the life sciences sector.
