COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MRes Clinical and Health Research programme is designed to develop advanced research knowledge and professional skills that prepare students for independent investigation within healthcare and clinical settings. The programme comprises 60 credits of core modules that provide a strong foundation in research design, evidence-based healthcare, and professional communication. Advanced Research Methods is the largest module and focuses on developing students’ ability to design, conduct, evaluate, and critically appraise research in applied health and clinical contexts. Students gain expertise in research methodologies, study design, data collection, data analysis, ethical considerations, and the interpretation of research findings, equipping them with the skills required to undertake high-quality research projects. Professional Communication in Healthcare develops the communication skills necessary for effective practice within healthcare and scientific environments. Students learn how to present information clearly and professionally to a variety of audiences, including healthcare professionals, researchers, patients, policymakers, and the wider public, strengthening both written and verbal communication abilities. Evidence Based Practice provides a comprehensive understanding of how research evidence is generated, evaluated, and applied within healthcare settings. Students explore the principles of evidence-based healthcare, critically assess research literature, and examine how evidence informs clinical decision-making, service improvement, and quality enhancement initiatives. Together, these modules develop the critical thinking, analytical, research, and communication skills required for successful independent research and evidence-informed professional practice. The taught stage serves as a vital preparation for the substantial research project that follows, enabling students to investigate topics aligned with their professional interests and contribute meaningfully to healthcare knowledge and practice.
