COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the MRes Business and Management programme provides a strong foundation in advanced research methodology and academic inquiry through three core modules worth a total of 60 credits. Research Design, Practice and Ethics introduces students to the principles of rigorous research planning and execution, focusing on the development of research questions, research design strategies, ethical considerations, data collection approaches, and the practical challenges associated with conducting high-quality business and management research. Students gain an understanding of how to design robust and ethically sound research projects that contribute meaningful insights to academic and professional contexts. Foundations in Qualitative Research develops expertise in qualitative research methodologies commonly used within business and social science research. Students explore techniques such as interviews, focus groups, observations, case studies, and thematic analysis, learning how to collect, interpret, and critically evaluate rich, non-numerical data to understand complex organisational and human behaviour. Fundamentals in Quantitative Research focuses on statistical and numerical approaches to research, equipping students with the skills needed to design surveys, analyse datasets, apply quantitative methods, interpret statistical findings, and draw evidence-based conclusions. Together, these modules provide a balanced understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research traditions, enabling students to select and apply appropriate methods to address diverse research questions. The programme follows the standard teaching delivery principles of Aston Business School, with each 20-credit module including a minimum of 20 hours of in-person timetabled learning and at least 20 hours of asynchronous online flexible learning. The remaining study hours are dedicated to independent learning, allowing students to engage deeply with research literature, methodological concepts, data analysis techniques, and project preparation. Through this combination of structured teaching and self-directed study, students develop advanced analytical, critical thinking, research design, and methodological skills that prepare them for the independent research components of the MRes programme. The taught stage serves as a vital foundation for doctoral study and research-focused careers by equipping students with the knowledge, confidence, and practical expertise required to undertake sophisticated business and management research within academic, public, and private sector environments.
