COURSE CURRICULUM

The taught stage of the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme at Aston University provides a comprehensive 120-credit foundation in key areas of public health theory, practice and research, designed to develop critical understanding and applied skills for addressing population health challenges. Students begin with The Social Determinants of Health, which explores how social, economic and environmental factors influence patterns of health and illness and how these shape inequalities within populations. Epidemiology introduces essential concepts and methods for studying disease distribution and determinants, enabling students to interpret health data and apply basic epidemiological techniques in real-world contexts. Health Promotion focuses on strategies for improving health at both individual and population levels, developing students’ ability to critically assess and apply health promotion theories and interventions. Public Health Ethics examines ethical principles and frameworks relevant to public health decision-making, supporting informed and responsible practice in complex healthcare environments. Global Health expands the perspective to international health challenges, exploring major global issues, theories and approaches to improving health outcomes across different regions. Digital Health introduces emerging technologies in healthcare, including artificial intelligence, data visualisation, digital hospital systems, remote monitoring and automation, highlighting their impact on modern health services and research. A major component of the taught stage is Advanced Research Methods, a 30-credit module that develops advanced understanding of research design, methodology and analytical techniques, preparing students to conduct independent public health research. Overall, the taught stage equips students with strong analytical, ethical and methodological skills, enabling them to understand and respond effectively to contemporary public health issues at local, national and global levels.
