COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Economics and Politics degree at Aston University provides an integrated program combining economic theory with political analysis, preparing students for careers in business, government, advocacy, and international organisations. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through core modules including Introduction to Studying and Researching Politics, British Politics since 1990, Principles of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, Mathematics for Economics, and Political Economy and Industrial Policy, alongside an optional module on current affairs or global history. The second year builds on this foundation with Comparative Government and Politics, Political Economy: Approaches, Concepts and Issues, Intermediate Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, and Quantitative Methods, supplemented by optional modules covering regional politics, EU policies, international climate politics, and applied economic topics such as markets, strategy, or sports economics. The third year is an integrated placement, giving students practical experience and professional development in the UK or abroad, supported by the Careers and Placements team. In the final year, students complete a Research Skills module and an Economics and Politics Dissertation, alongside Further Topics in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, while selecting optional modules spanning global politics, international relations, governance, development, and applied economic policy. This combination of rigorous academic study, optional specialisations, and practical experience equips graduates with analytical, research, and problem-solving skills, preparing them to navigate complex economic and political environments effectively.
