COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biomedicine program is structured to develop a strong understanding of biological science and human health through a combination of theoretical learning, laboratory practice, and professional experience. In the first year, students study core biological concepts, beginning with biomolecules such as sugars, lipids, DNA, RNA, amino acids, and proteins, while gaining practical laboratory experience in biochemical techniques. They also explore cell structure and function, including cell communication, the cell cycle, and how cells form tissues and organs. Additional modules introduce the principles of microbiology and genetics, along with metabolic physiology, where students learn about major metabolic pathways and the structure and function of key body systems such as the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary systems. In the second year, the program becomes more specialised, focusing on molecular biology and biotechnology, the mechanisms of disease, and the biological causes and treatments of human illnesses. Students also study cell signalling and hormonal regulation within the body. During the third year, students complete a biosciences placement where they gain valuable real-world experience in a professional research or laboratory environment. In the final year, students prepare for and carry out an independent research project, developing skills in scientific investigation, data analysis, and critical thinking, while also enhancing professional and research skills for careers in biomedical science.
