COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science program is structured to build a strong understanding of human biology, disease processes, and laboratory science while developing practical research skills. In the first year, students study core modules that introduce the fundamental components of biomedical science. They explore biomolecules such as sugars, lipids, DNA, RNA, amino acids and proteins, learning about their formation, structure and biological functions through both theoretical study and practical laboratory techniques. Students also examine the organisation and function of cells and sub-cellular structures, including how cells communicate, grow, and form tissues and organs. Additional modules introduce the principles of microbiology and genetics, covering microorganisms, genetic concepts, and model organisms used in scientific research. The metabolism and physiology module focuses on the structure and function of major body systems such as the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary systems, while also examining the metabolic pathways that support these systems. In the final year, students study advanced topics including immunology and inflammation, which examines the role of the immune system in health and disease, and clinical and food microbiology, which focuses on infectious diseases and microbial pathogens. Students also complete research project preparation and an independent research project where they design experiments, analyse results, and present their findings, while developing professional and research skills needed for careers in biomedical science and healthcare.
