COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biochemistry degree at Aston University is designed to build a strong understanding of biochemical science while developing practical and professional skills across four years of study. In the first year, students gain a solid foundation in core biological and chemical concepts. They study biomolecules such as sugars, lipids, DNA, RNA, amino acids and proteins, along with their structure and function through practical laboratory work. Students also learn about cell structure, cell communication, tissues and organ systems, as well as the basic principles of microbiology and genetics. Molecular metabolism introduces important metabolic pathways, enzymes, and regulatory mechanisms involved in cellular processes. In the second year, students explore more advanced topics including molecular biology and biotechnology, where they learn how microbes, enzymes and genetic techniques are used in biotechnology, diagnostics and therapeutics. They also study disease mechanisms and immune responses, the structure and function of cell membranes, and detailed aspects of protein structure and experimental analysis. During the third year, students complete a biosciences placement where they gain valuable professional experience in industrial, clinical or research environments. In the final year, students prepare for and complete an independent research project, developing skills in scientific investigation, data analysis, critical thinking, ethical awareness and professional development for careers in bioscience and biotechnology.
