COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biomedicine program is designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of biological processes and human health through progressive study of core scientific subjects. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in biological and biochemical principles. They study biomolecules such as sugars, lipids, DNA, RNA, amino acids and proteins, learning about their structure and function through practical laboratory techniques. Students also explore cell structure and organisation, cell communication, and how cells form tissues and organs. Additional modules introduce microbiology and genetics, along with metabolic physiology, where students examine major metabolic pathways and the structure and function of key body systems including the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary systems. In the second year, the program focuses on more specialised biomedical topics. Students study molecular biology and biotechnology to understand how microbes, enzymes and genetic techniques are used in biotechnology, diagnostics and medical treatments. They also examine mechanisms of disease, the biological basis of human illness, and the role of pathogens and immune responses. Other modules focus on cell signalling and hormonal regulation within the body. In the final year, students prepare for and complete an independent research project where they design experiments, analyse scientific literature, interpret data, and present their findings. They also develop professional and research skills needed for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, and biotechnology industries.
