COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biochemistry program at Aston University is structured to develop students’ understanding of biochemical science through progressive study across the degree. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in fundamental biological and chemical concepts. They study biomolecules such as sugars, lipids, DNA, RNA, amino acids and proteins, and learn about their structure and function through practical laboratory work. Students also explore cell structure and organisation, cell communication, the cell cycle, and how cells form tissues and organs. Additional modules introduce the principles of microbiology, genetics, and model organisms, while molecular metabolism examines metabolic pathways, enzymes, and key chemical reactions within living systems. In the second year, students study more specialised topics including molecular biology and biotechnology, where they learn how microbes, enzymes and genetic techniques are used in biotechnology, diagnostics and medical therapies. They also examine mechanisms of disease and immune responses, the structure and function of biological membranes, and detailed aspects of protein structure and experimental techniques used to study proteins. In the final year, students prepare for and complete an independent research project where they design experiments, analyse scientific literature, and present their findings. They also develop professional and research skills such as critical data analysis, scientific communication, ethical awareness, and professional practice for careers in bioscience.
