COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Design Engineering degree at Aston University offers a comprehensive program that integrates mechanical engineering and product design, emphasizing practical, hands-on learning. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Introduction to Design-Build-Test, Materials and Manufacturing 1, Introductory Mathematics and Programming for Engineering, Electronics 1, Engineering Science 1, Power Skills, and an Interdisciplinary Design Project. These modules provide technical understanding, problem-solving skills, and teamwork experience. In the second year, students advance their technical and design expertise through Engineering Science 2, Materials and Manufacturing 2, Advanced Mathematical Modelling, Design Communications, Advanced Design Innovation, an Integrated Design Project, and a CDIO Team Project, combining theoretical knowledge with collaborative design challenges. An optional integrated placement year allows students to gain real-world industry experience, supported by the Careers and Placements team, enhancing employability and professional development. In the final year, students consolidate their learning with advanced modules including Advanced Solid Mechanics and Finite Element Analysis, Design Futures, Design Sprint, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, Engineering Design and the Environment, Professional Engineering Practice, and an Engineering Major Project. This structure ensures graduates develop technical competence, creative problem-solving skills, and practical experience, preparing them for careers in design engineering, mechanical engineering, product development, and other engineering roles in diverse industrial and technological environments.
