COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering program at Aston University is structured over three years, with each year focusing on building knowledge and practical skills required for professional civil engineers. In the first year, students develop fundamental engineering knowledge through modules such as Introduction to Civil Engineering, Engineering Surveying, and Construction Materials. They also study core scientific and technical subjects including Engineering Science, Introductory Mathematics for Engineering, and Introductory Programming for Engineering and Physical Sciences. In addition, Power Skills and an Interdisciplinary Design Project help students strengthen teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities while working on practical design tasks. In the second year, the focus shifts to more specialized civil engineering topics. Students study Structural Analysis and Numerical Modelling, Sustainable Materials and Design, Fluid Mechanics, and Geotechnics, which provide deeper technical understanding of structures, materials, soil behavior, and water systems. Other modules such as BIM for Construction and Transport Infrastructure Engineering introduce modern digital tools and transportation planning concepts used in industry. In the final year, students apply their knowledge to advanced subjects and major projects. They complete an Independent Civil Engineering Project and a Civil Engineering Design Project while studying Hydraulics, Geotechnics, Civil Engineering Project Management, and Sustainable Infrastructure Systems. These modules prepare students to design and manage complex infrastructure projects while focusing on sustainability and professional practice.
