COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Biomedical Engineering degree is structured to progressively develop students’ engineering knowledge and its application in healthcare technologies. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in engineering and scientific principles. They study modules such as introductory mathematics, programming for engineering and physical sciences, engineering science, electronics, and materials and manufacturing. Students are also introduced to human anatomy and physiology to understand the biological systems that engineering solutions are designed to support. In addition, they develop transferable abilities through power skills and gain practical experience through an interdisciplinary design project. In the second year, the course focuses on specialised biomedical engineering topics including advanced mathematical modelling, biomedical signal processing, biomaterials, biofluid mechanics, biomechanics and kinematics, and medical biophysics. Students also complete an integrated design project that allows them to apply engineering knowledge to solve real biomedical problems. Students who choose the integrated placement year spend their third year gaining valuable professional experience in industry, supported by the university’s careers and placements team. In the final year, students study advanced modules such as medical imaging, biomedical implants and prosthetics, finite element analysis, computational fluid mechanics, and the introduction to artificial intelligence and robotics. The course also includes professional engineering practice and concludes with a major engineering project where students apply their knowledge to solve a complex biomedical engineering challenge.
