COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering degree at Aston University is structured over four years and is designed to develop students’ knowledge and practical engineering skills progressively. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in essential engineering subjects. They study modules such as introduction to aerospace engineering, materials and manufacturing, introductory mathematics for engineering, programming for engineering and physical sciences, electronics, and engineering science. Students also develop important transferable abilities through power skills and apply their learning in an interdisciplinary design project. In the second year, the course becomes more specialised with modules including aerodynamics, advanced mathematical modelling, aerospace thermodynamics and propulsion, aerospace structures, aerospace electrical power systems, and materials and manufacturing at a higher level. Students also study electromechanical design, dynamics and control, and complete an aerospace design project that develops their practical design and problem-solving skills. During the third year, students undertake an integrated placement year where they gain valuable industry experience and professional insight while being supported by the university’s careers and placements team. In the final year, students study advanced aerospace topics such as aerospace dynamics and control, advanced aerospace structures, computational fluid dynamics, advanced aerodynamics, and rotorcraft and UAV design. The program also includes professional engineering practice and concludes with a major engineering project where students independently apply their knowledge to solve a complex engineering problem.
