COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Design Engineering degree at Aston University offers a comprehensive program that develops technical expertise, creative problem-solving, and practical design skills. In the first year, students build a foundation in engineering principles and design through modules such as Introduction to Design-Build-Test, Materials and Manufacturing 1, Introductory Mathematics and Programming for Engineering, Electronics 1, Engineering Science 1, Power Skills, and an Interdisciplinary Design Project. These modules provide essential knowledge in materials, mechanics, and digital systems while fostering teamwork and communication skills. The second year advances students’ understanding with Engineering Science 2, Materials and Manufacturing 2, Advanced Mathematical Modelling, Design Communications, Advanced Design Innovation, an Integrated Design Project, and a CDIO Team Project, combining theoretical knowledge with collaborative, real-world design challenges. In the final year, students consolidate their learning and demonstrate professional competence through advanced modules including Advanced Solid Mechanics and Finite Element Analysis, Design Futures, Design Sprint, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, Engineering Design and the Environment, Professional Engineering Practice, and an Engineering Major Project. This progression ensures students gain a balance of technical knowledge, practical experience, and creative design skills, preparing them to enter careers in design engineering, mechanical engineering, product development, and related fields, where they can contribute to innovative engineering solutions and complex industrial projects.
