COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering course at Aston University is structured to progressively develop students’ engineering knowledge and practical skills across three academic years. In the first year, students focus on building a strong foundation in core engineering principles. They study modules such as introduction to aerospace engineering, materials and manufacturing, introductory mathematics, programming for engineering and physical sciences, electronics, and engineering science. In addition, students develop transferable professional abilities through power skills and apply their knowledge in an interdisciplinary design project. In the second year, the course becomes more specialised, introducing key aerospace subjects such as aerodynamics, aerospace thermodynamics and propulsion, aerospace structures, aerospace electrical power systems, and advanced mathematical modelling. Students also study materials and manufacturing at a higher level, electromechanical design, dynamics and control, and complete an aerospace design project that allows them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical design challenges. In the final year, students focus on advanced aerospace engineering topics including aerospace dynamics and control, advanced aerospace structures, computational fluid dynamics, advanced aerodynamics, and rotorcraft and UAV design. They also study professional engineering practice to understand industry standards and responsibilities. The year concludes with a major engineering project where students independently research, design, and develop a solution to a complex engineering problem, demonstrating the knowledge and skills gained throughout the degree.
