COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Textiles Design course offers a comprehensive three-year journey, starting with a strong foundation in practical skills, contextual knowledge, and creative exploration. In the first year, students are introduced to a broad range of textile applications through a mix of lectures, seminars, demonstrations, studio projects, and industry visits. This year is dedicated to experimentation and discovery, enabling students to develop personal design identities while understanding the fundamentals of textiles in historical, visual, and professional contexts. A key feature of the first year is a mandatory work placement lasting from ten days to a month, with previous students gaining experience at prestigious companies like Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Designers Guild, and Zandra Rhodes.The second year focuses on refining individual interests, technical ability, and industry engagement. Students work on live briefs with real-world clients and participate in national and international competitions such as Hand and Lock and Style Council NY. These projects are designed to enhance professional skills and encourage students to apply their growing expertise creatively and strategically.In the final year, students refine their creative voice, working independently to develop a focused body of work that showcases their strengths and ambitions. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, experimentation, and integrating theory with practice. Students are supported in building professional portfolios, identifying their niche in the industry, and preparing for employment or postgraduate study. Opportunities to engage with the professional world continue through visits to trade shows like Premiere Vision Paris and exhibitions such as New Designers in London. The course fosters autonomy, originality, and leadership in textile practice, aiming to produce graduates who are confident, employable, and ready to shape the future of the global textile industry.
