COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Modelmaking course at AUB is structured across three years to build a strong foundation of professional skills and gradually guide students toward confident, independent practice. In the first year (Level 4), students are introduced to core skills essential for a career in modelmaking, including fabrication techniques, design thinking, and the use of models as a form of visual and conceptual communication. Pre-existing notions about making and representation are challenged and reshaped to foster a deeper, more critical understanding of the discipline. Alongside practical learning, a lecture program explores key theoretical concepts such as audience, sustainability, ethics, and communication, which continue to shape students’ development into the second year.The second year shifts focus outward, encouraging students to explore how modelmaking functions in different professional settings. Through hands-on work, industry engagement, and reflective research, students learn to interpret and represent ideas for real-world audiences. Interaction with clients and professionals fosters a more grounded understanding of industry standards and expectations. Students begin to define their personal interests and possible career trajectories, developing independence in both practice and critical thought.In the third year, students are supported in shaping a clear professional identity and practice. They are expected to take ownership of their goals, benchmark their progress against industry standards, and develop a high level of ambition and resourcefulness. Through independent projects, industry collaborations, and work experience, students refine their skills and align their portfolios with career aspirations. Dialogue with tutors becomes more collaborative, empowering students to make informed decisions from a professional standpoint. The course encourages students to view themselves as emerging professionals, ready to enter the creative industries with confidence, technical excellence, and a deep understanding of their place in the modelmaking world.
