COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Make-up for Media and Performance course at Arts University Bournemouth is structured across three years, each designed to progressively build a student's practical, theoretical, and professional expertise. In the first year (Level 4), students focus on developing essential creative, analytical, and critical skills required in the make-up industry. Practical workshops and projects enhance their abilities in make-up, wigs, and hair design, with a focus on postiche. Interpersonal and communication skills are cultivated through hands-on work with peers, models, and performers. Students begin compiling a professional portfolio while also strengthening academic skills such as research, reflection, and critical thinking.In the second year (Level 5), students deepen their technical and creative capabilities while exploring potential career paths and specialisations. Emphasis is placed on employability, digital technology in make-up, and collaborative industry-related projects. Through live performances, shoots, and events, students gain real-world experience and expand their understanding of the make-up artist’s role within a creative team. Contextual knowledge of make-up transformation and performance is also developed through targeted research.The final year (Level 6) encourages students to define their professional and academic focus. Risk-taking, independent thinking, and research-driven practice are promoted through advanced written and practical work. Students explore specialist areas such as prosthetic transformation and work on live projects that contribute to an enhanced professional portfolio. The curriculum supports critical inquiry and encourages philosophical engagement with contextual issues. Graduates can earn a degree with a specific focus by choosing from four named awards: BA (Hons) Make-up for Media and Performance, or with specialisations in Hair and Make-up for Fashion; Hair and Make-up for Stage, TV, and Film; or Prosthetic Make-up Effects. The course ultimately prepares students to enter the industry with a refined skill set, creative vision, and strong professional grounding.
