COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Illustration course at Arts University Bournemouth is structured to guide students through a progressive journey of creative exploration, skill development, and professional preparation. In the first year (Level 4), students are introduced to the diverse world of illustration, with a strong focus on experimentation and taking creative risks. The aim is to develop a unique visual language through hands-on workshops, studio practice, and critical reflection. Tutorials, group critiques, and feedback sessions support students in refining their ideas, while independent research strengthens their ability to contextualise their work.In the second year (Level 5), the course encourages more independent thinking and critical awareness. Students deepen their conceptual and technical understanding by integrating both traditional and digital approaches to image-making. They are guided to challenge boundaries and explore various techniques—from printmaking to CGI—based on their individual creative needs. Emphasis is placed on communicating ideas effectively to specific audiences and refining the personal direction of their practice. This year lays the foundation for a more audience-aware and technically sophisticated practice.The final year (Level 6) focuses on professionalism, innovation, and defining a personal creative strategy. Students are expected to take full ownership of their work, setting goals and identifying contexts in which their illustration practice can thrive post-graduation. Through research, self-directed projects, and professional development units, students consolidate their identity as illustrators and build a strong portfolio tailored to their career aspirations. With guidance from tutors, they prepare to transition into the creative industries with a clear understanding of their place within the field and a strategic plan for sustaining their practice beyond university.
