COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Film Production course at Arts University Bournemouth is structured to progressively build both technical expertise and critical thinking across three years. In the first year (Level 4), students are introduced to the core principles of film production through hands-on technical training, historical and contextual studies, and guided practical application. Emphasis is placed on understanding how film functions in today’s media environment and broader society. Students are encouraged to experiment with creative ideas while learning key industry standards such as set protocols, health and safety procedures, and collaborative production practices. These early experiences help inform each student’s choice of specialisation by the end of the year.In the second year (Level 5), students begin to deepen their technical and creative skills within their chosen specialism. This level fosters the development of professional habits, including reflective thinking and critical evaluation, both essential to evolving as a filmmaker. Teamwork remains central, and students participate in larger-scale productions while engaging with more complex contextual studies. Certified specialist training continues, and health and safety practices are reinforced throughout all practical work.The third year (Level 6) focuses on advanced independent and collaborative production work. Students take on defined specialist roles in the creation of graduation films, contributing meaningfully to pre-production, production, and post-production. This final year serves as the culmination of all prior learning, allowing students to demonstrate their professional readiness and creative maturity. Emphasis is placed on independent study, technical precision, and leadership within team environments. By the end of the course, students will have built a portfolio of work that reflects their personal strengths, industry understanding, and readiness for employment in film and media or for further postgraduate study.
