COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing course is structured to support the development of aspiring writers through a progression of creative and academic growth. In the first year, you’ll explore a broad range of creative writing areas, from fiction and poetry to scriptwriting and nonfiction. Through a series of workshops, seminars and lectures led by both academic staff and industry professionals, you’ll gain essential skills in writing, editing, and critique. You’ll be introduced to key texts and authors, helping you understand how reading informs and inspires your own work. Writing workshops are a core component of this year, providing a supportive environment for peer feedback, confidence building, and refining your voice.In the second year, you’ll begin to specialise and apply your developing skills in the genres and formats of your choice. You’ll explore real-world applications of your writing through live projects and engagement with the wider literary and creative industries. This includes learning about the publishing process, literary agencies, and marketing. You’ll also gain employability skills in areas such as freelancing, self-promotion, and managing creative projects. This stage helps you see your writing as a professional practice and opens up pathways for potential careers.Your final year is focused on consolidating your skills and developing a professional identity as a writer. You’ll work closely with academic mentors and, where possible, a professional writer or editor to guide a major project in your chosen specialism. This could be a novel extract, poetry collection, script, or other creative form. You’ll also complete a critical essay to support and contextualise your creative work. By the end of the course, you’ll have produced a substantial portfolio that showcases your voice, vision, and readiness to enter the creative industries or pursue further study.
