COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Costume course offers a progressive and immersive learning experience that prepares students for the dynamic world of costume interpretation and supervision. In the first year, students gain a solid foundation in costume construction and sewing techniques, along with an introduction to the role of the costume supervisor. Through collaborative projects with designers, they explore how design-theory and aesthetics influence costume interpretation, focusing on elements such as cut, proportion, and surface decoration. Academic research and writing are integrated into the curriculum to build contextual understanding of costume in performance.In the second year, students delve deeper into historical costume through a hands-on exploration of period garments and dress history. This includes working with garments from the university's own Costume Archive and producing historically inspired costumes using traditional cutting and construction techniques. A written project allows students to contextualize dress history within a performance framework. The year also features a tailoring unit, where traditional methods are taught in the creation of tailored garments. The final unit offers a chance to specialise in either costume making or supervision, encouraging creative risk-taking and preparation for the third year.The final year emphasizes real-world practice, with students taking on roles in live productions, museum exhibitions, and film projects. Collaboration with acting and film students simulates industry environments, enhancing teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. Students also complete a 5,000-word research project reflecting on their practical work, and a major project that includes professional development, portfolio building, and participation in a graduate exhibition. This final phase of the course ensures that students leave with the technical ability, creative vision, and professional identity needed to enter the theatre, film, or exhibition industries with confidence and competence.
