COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Costume for Film program at Arts University Bournemouth guides students from foundational skills to professional practice over three years. In the first year, students develop essential costume design and production techniques, including sewing, pattern cutting, drawing, digital processes, fabric identification, dyeing, and garment construction. They learn to interpret character, apply design aesthetics, and select fabrics while exploring sustainable costume practices. Collaborative projects with other Bournemouth Film School courses provide hands-on experience in professional production environments, including post-production processes, and introduce students to ethical and sustainable approaches, digital prototyping, zero-waste design, and emerging textile technologies. In the second year, students consolidate technical and conceptual skills through live film projects, gaining independence in managing briefs and developing their professional voice. The Career Development Portfolio supports skill building in critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving, and professional competencies, while offering opportunities to focus on specialist skills such as tailoring, millinery, or software development. The final year emphasizes professional practice and preparation for employment or further study. Students focus on a chosen specialism, explore multiple roles, refine interpersonal and professional skills, and produce a professional portfolio. Independent research projects aligned with their practice enable them to develop expertise and originality, preparing graduates for careers as costume designers, makers, wardrobe supervisors, and other creative roles in film, television, and related industries.
