COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Commercial Photography course at AUB offers a structured, progressive approach to developing the creative, technical, and professional skills required in the commercial photography industry. In the first year, students are introduced to a variety of photographic techniques and processes, both traditional and digital. They build a strong technical foundation through training in studio and location lighting, analogue and digital image capture, moving image, and postproduction. Alongside practical learning, students engage with historical and theoretical content to strengthen their understanding of photography’s broader context through written assignments.In the second year, students deepen their creative abilities and expand their skillset, particularly in moving image, digital workflows, and self-promotion. Two practical units allow students to begin refining their genre-specific interests. Industry engagement is a key element in this year, with work experience or professional interactions that help students gain valuable insight and begin to build their professional network. A critical analysis unit introduces key theoretical approaches, encouraging students to analyse the meaning and social implications of photography and preparing them for the academic challenges of their final year.The third year focuses on career readiness. Students work in specialised study groups aligned with their professional interests and create final major projects that form the core of their industry-ready portfolios. A research paper enables students to critically explore a chosen subject in depth, combining academic research with practical understanding. By graduation, students emerge with a polished commercial portfolio, real-world experience, and the confidence to pursue careers in fashion, advertising, editorial, or documentary photography. The course prepares students not only to enter the creative industries but also to make a meaningful impact within them.
