COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Ceramics program provides a progressive pathway for students to develop technical expertise, conceptual understanding, and a distinct creative voice. In the first year, students are introduced to higher education study and build foundational skills in hand-building, mould-making, throwing, casting, surface decoration, glazing, and kiln firing. Alongside technical practice, they explore the cultural and historical contexts of ceramics and begin experimenting with their own ideas, integrating simple digital tools and emerging technologies such as AI to support design and form exploration. The second year consolidates these skills through more ambitious, collaborative projects and set briefs, with an emphasis on sustainability, material ethics, identity, and social impact. Students are encouraged to undertake self-initiated projects, respond to live or competition briefs, and critically investigate designers or studios that align with their practice. The final year focuses on preparing students for professional practice or further study, providing opportunities to undertake larger self-directed projects that demonstrate technical mastery and critical intent. The culmination of the degree is the Final Major Project, supported by an industry-focused report, professional development, portfolio preparation, and exhibition opportunities. Graduates leave the program equipped to establish studio practices, work as freelance ceramicists, enter product design, or pursue postgraduate study, with a strong foundation in both creative and professional skills.
