COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Business of Games program provides students with a thorough understanding of the gaming industry, blending practical business skills with industry-specific knowledge. In the first year, students explore the structure of the global games industry, understanding the roles of developers, publishers, and distributors, and studying major market trends including mobile, indie, and emerging technologies such as VR. They develop foundational skills in marketing and audience engagement, learning to craft campaigns, manage communities, and integrate feedback to enhance player retention. Financial literacy is introduced through the first unit in a trilogy on Games Finance and Revenue Models, teaching budgeting, revenue streams, and basic financial analysis for both indie and AAA games. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of financial management and revenue strategies while examining ethical considerations such as gender, values, and identity in games. The Launchpad unit develops professional skills, including portfolio building, job application strategies, entrepreneurship, and project management using Agile and Scrum methodologies. In the final year, the advanced finance unit explores global market challenges, innovative revenue models, and long-term sustainability, while the Games Publishing and Distribution unit addresses traditional and digital platforms. The program culminates in a Final Major Project, the Games Studio Business Plan, integrating all aspects of business strategy, finance, marketing, and distribution to prepare students for leadership roles or entrepreneurial ventures in the gaming industry.
